Reply · Charlotte Reads Classics · 10/10/2012 at 1:21 PM. There are going to be at least three giant adaptations this year alone with "Anna Karenina", "Les Miserables" and "The Great Gatsby". It's an affair in which the woman feels guilty and sad, but doesn't kill herself. I haven't read Anna Karenina yet, but I want to soon. As “The Lady with the Lap Dog” because the first twenty or so times I read it, the title was translated that way. While previous versions have softened the robust, and sometimes shocking, quality of Tolstoy's writing, Pevear and Volokhonsky have produced a translation true to his powerful voice. It's a short story, not a novel. But Pevear and Volokhonsky's translation, “little dog,” is closer to the Russian title. As my sister Katharine Holt, a Russian literature scholar, recently reminded me, one could read “The Lady with the Little Dog” as a lower-stakes version of Anna Karenina. When I first started reading this book, I was doing so at work, online on Project Gutenberg. I read the Penguin Classics edition which is translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. The Karenina translation recommended to me was the Pevear-Volokhonsky version. Books: Anna Karenina, by Leo Tolstoy.
